Day 16 (August 27th): SE Missouri

The first 20 miles of our day flew by, and we stopped in Sikeston for
lunch at Lambert's Cafe. We were greeted by waiters throwing hot rolls
at us and a sorghum guy making the rounds with a spoon. There were
also okra lady, macaroni man and baked beans boy, among others. Our
server, Maxine, sent us off with cinnamon rolls the size of our heads.

Kathleen and I pedaled 70 miles through soybean and corn fields along
back roads, finally arriving at Lake Wappapelo. We competed in a 12
mph race with a tractor, crossed lots of one-lane bridges and baked in
the long stretches of roads without shade. And, today was the first
day of Kathleen's leg of the ride that we didn't get a flat! All in
all, it was pleasantly eventless.

The breeze began to strengthen a little today. I think this begins the
next few weeks of headwinds and cornfields.
